Abstract:
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is a widely applied diagnostic procedure to assess prostate status; however, male patients are frequently anxious, uncomfortable, and unclear about what happens during the procedure. Patient experiences are explored in this study in order to reveal the physical and psychological aspects of TRUS. Thus, this study explored the experiences of male patients that have undergone transrectal ultrasound at City of San Fernando, La Union. A narrative qualitative design was used with a participant of five (5) where the saturation points was reached and used interview as a method of data collection. The researchers developed and formulated two significant themes: The Unease Medical Scrutiny, and Fear of the Unknown. It revealed factors such as discomfort, physical pain, pyrexia reaction, and anxiety that affected the patient’s well-being and confidence. Healthcare workers were crucial in guiding and supporting patient’s confidence. Patient’s confidence is supported by good patient-centered communication and patient preparation can undermine the procedure and can lead to increase of anxiety.
