Abstract:
The study aimed to determine the level of competencies of Clinical Instructors assigned in the critical areas of tertiary hospitals in La Union.
Results show that Clinical Instructors assigned in the critical areas of tertiary hospitals in La Union are young adults, married, BSN with MAN/MSN units and with 1-3 years of service. Significant relationships were found in ER between educational attainment and management of resources, environment and equipment; and civil status and collaboration and teamwork. Years of service and records management were significantly related in ICU; civil status and legal responsibility and educational attainment and research in LR-DR; and OR-PACU had civil status and ethico-moral responsibility; personal and professional development and communication; and years of service and ethico-moral responsibility.
Generally, all the competencies for nursing practice are considered strengths and only the identified weakness is research. The study concluded that the Clinical Instructors are characterized by individuals who are active, responsible in performing tasks, with MAN/MSN units and with short length of service. They highly comply with standards set by the CHED on the eleven core competencies of nursing practice. Civil status influences collaboration and teamwork, legal responsibility, personal and professional development, and communication. Highest educational attainment affects management of resources, environment and equipment and research. Years of service affects records management and ethico-moral responsibility. There is a need to improve on research.
